Josef Schönbrunner

Josef Schönbrunner (from 1904 Josef von Schönbrunner , born February 14, 1831 in Vienna , † December 2, 1905 there ) was an Austrian painter, illustrator, restorer and museum official.

Life

Josef Schönbrunner was the son of the carpenter Johann Schönbrunner and brother of Karl (1832–1877), Ignaz (1835–1900) and Franz Xaver Schönbrunner (1845–1903), all of whom were active as painters.

He studied from 1844 to 1846 and from 1847 to 1840 at the Vienna Art Academy with Josef von Führich , Leopold Kupelwieser and Johann Ender . In 1864 he began his work at the Albertina in Vienna, first as an official, from 1871 as custodian, from 1884 as inspector and from 1896 until his death as director. He was the last artist to head the collection, which had been common up until then. On May 1, 1904, he was ennobled ( Josef Edler von Schönbrunner ).
