Josef Schertel (born January 10, 1810 in Augsburg , † March 8, 1869 in Munich ) was a German landscape painter.

Life

Schertel was born as the son of a royal Bavarian chief customs inspector. He attended high schools in Augsburg and Würzburg . Then he was trained as a lithographer .

On June 24, 1830, he enrolled in the history class of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . After graduating, he stayed in Munich as a freelance artist and devoted himself to landscape painting. During a trip to the Chiemsee he met the painter Daniel Fohr , who recommended him to the painter Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern . Morgenstern soon became Schertel's friend and teacher.

As a landscape painter Schertel was mainly active in Bavaria, he rarely went on further study trips.

At the age of 46, he married Emma (nee Zetler) in 1856. His health deteriorated in the next year, but he remained active in pain-free days until his death in 1869. Their daughter Charlotte († April 19, 1880) married Morgenstern's son Carl Ernst Morgenstern in 1870 and was the mother of the writer and poet Christian Morgenstern . The son received a musical education and became a singer in Berlin.
