Josef Seger (composer)

Josef Ferdinand Norbert Seger (also Seeg (e) r, Segert ; born March 21, 1716 in Řepín , † April 22, 1782 in Prague ) was a Bohemian organist and composer and one of the most important representatives of the Old Bohemian School.

Life

Josef Seger was a student of Bohuslav Matej Černohorský . He worked as a singer and violinist in various Prague churches. In 1741 he became organist at the Teyn Church and in 1745 at the Kreuzherrenkirche . His most important students were Jan Antonín Koželuh and Josef Mysliveček . In 1782, Emperor Joseph II , who was enthusiastic about Seger's organ playing, intended to transfer the position of court organist to him in Vienna , but Seger died before receiving the decree of employment. Seger was an extremely prolific composer. He wrote several hundred organ pieces ( preludes , toccatas and fugues ), masses , motets , psalms and litanies . His works were forgotten for a long time and were only rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century.
