Josef "Sepp" Stabel (born September 21, 1948 in Pirmasens ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper and soccer coach.

Player career

Sepp Stabel played with SG and VfB Pirmasens until 1967 and moved to the professional squad of 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1967 . He remained loyal to FCK until the end of his career in 1980. In the “Red Devils” he was first behind Wolfgang Schnarr and then behind Josef Elting, “number two”. Elting was able to oust Stabel in 1972 and was thus a regular goalkeeper in the 1972/73 season and partly also in 1973/74. After that, FCK signed Sweden's Ronnie Hellström and Stabel was now in the shadow of the world-class goalkeeper, but was always a reliable substitute goalkeeper.

He played 74 Bundesliga appearances . On December 12, 1979 Sepp Stabel scored in the UEFA Cup game at home in the Betzenberg Stadium against Diósgyőri VTK a penalty to make it 6-1. He played a total of 95 competitive games (one goal) for the Palatinate. Stabel had to end his career due to a shoulder injury.

Coaching career

In March 1980, Stabel received the soccer teacher diploma from the German Sport University in Cologne.

Even after the end of his active career, he stayed with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, now in the coaching staff. In the 1980/81 season and at the beginning of the 1981/82 season, Stabel was assistant coach of the Bundesliga team and trained the amateurs.

His second coaching station was Wormatia Worms . In October 1981 he took over from Slobodan Jovanić as coach of the relegation-threatened second division club. The young coach did not manage to lead Worms out of the relegation zone and rose with the club as third from bottom in the Oberliga Südwest . There, too, Wormatia mostly found herself in the lower part of the table and Sepp Stabel was released in February 1983. In the cup things went a little better - they qualified for the DFB Cup , in which Worms reached the round of 16 and had to admit defeat to Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart .

From 1983 to 1987, Stabel was in charge of training at TuS Hohenecken . Here he was very successful: He led the team from the A-Class to the Association League.

On July 1, 1987, he returned to FCK and was coach of the amateur team. On November 12, 1987, he replaced Hans Bongartz as head coach of the professional team. Kaiserslautern was at this point in the relegation battle and finally achieved relegation. Although the FCK landed in the following season ( 1988/89 ) with a ninth place in the table in the secured midfield, Sepp Stabel's contract was not extended at the end of the season. During the current season, the presidium decided to hire a new coach.

He signed a contract with the newly promoted Bundesliga club FC 08 Homburg for the next season . After a first half of the season with ups and downs (14th place after 17 games), the majority of the second half was disappointing. After a 1: 3 defeat at Stabel's former employer 1. FC Kaiserslautern , FC Homburg fell to 17th place and could not get away from the relegation ranks. Nevertheless, the Presidium held on to Sepp Stabel for a long time, as there had previously been a high fluctuation in the coaching position at FCH. He was released on April 11, 1990. Co-trainer Manfred Lenz had represented Stabel on April 7th during the game against Karlsruher SC due to illness . Homburg won 2-0, which was the first victory after ten games without a win. The club's management then decided to continue to employ Lenz as head coach. At the time of separation, the FCH was in the last place in the table.

In the 1991/92 season he was a coach at the Southwest Oberligisten FK Pirmasens , in 1992/93 he took over training at TuS Hohenecken again.
