Josef Wiedemann (composer)

Josef Wiedemann (born December 26, 1828 in Kvítkov ( Bohemia ), † September 3, 1919 in Prague ) was an Austrian military bandmaster and composer .

Life

In 1848 Josef Wiedemann became a musician in the military music of the kuk Infantry Regiment No. 42. From 1854 until his retirement in 1896 he worked there as Kapellmeister . With this regiment he was stationed in Vienna from 1866 to 1871 and performed there at numerous private concerts and dance events. In 1867, his orchestra also took part in the world premiere of the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube as part of the carnival song table of the Vienna Men's Choir ; however, the musical direction was held by the then choir master of the Vienna men's choir, Rudolf Weinwurm . In addition, Wiedemann was a founding member of the Kapellmeister pension association.

Wiedemann was the recipient of numerous awards, including the First Class Golden Cross of Merit of the Ernst August Order , the Silver Cross of Merit of the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg House Order of the Wendish Crown and the Golden Cross of Merit with the Crown .

Wiedemann was married and had two sons.

Works

Today Wiedemann is best known for his marching compositions. The Wagram March , which has been used since 1960 as the traditional march of the Theresian Military Academy and the Guard Battalion of the Austrian Armed Forces, became particularly important . In addition, Wiedemann wrote numerous potpourris , quadrilles and polkas based on opera and operetta motifs, especially by Offenbach.
