Josep Barberà i Humbert

Josep Barberà i Humbert (born January 27, 1874 in Barcelona ; † February 19, 1947 there ) was a Catalan composer and music teacher .

life and work

Josep Barberà entered the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona at the age of eleven . He studied music theory, piano and harmony and became a composition student of Felip Pedrell in the final training phase .

He later became a lecturer at the Conservatori del Liceu and taught harmony and composition. From 1931 to 1938 he was director of the conservatory. He did research on folk songs. As a music teacher he worked with Maria Montessori in many ways . He published a course on melody , a treatise on music, and treatises on music theory in the field of music education .

He composed symphonic works, choral and piano music as well as songs. His symphonic works include the Tres Miniatures (1919), the L'enterrament d'una verge ("Burial of a Virgin"), El fumador d'opi ("The Opium Smoker "), a divertimento about a folk song (1921) and the symphonic poem Alfeu i Aretusa (1933).

Josep Barberà's students included Ireneu Segarra , Gregori Estrada and David Pujol .
