life and work

Gregori Estrada studied from 1926 to 1932 at the Escola de Montserrat with Anselm Ferrer , Àngel Rodamilans and Ildefons Civil (violin). In 1933 he entered the Benedictine order. He was ordained a priest in 1941 and changed his name from Francesc Xavier to Gregori Maria. From 1935 he studied organ with Josep Muset at the Conservatori del Liceu . The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War surprised Estrada in Andorra. He had to interrupt his studies because of this. He sought refuge in the German Benedictine monasteries of Maria Laach and Beuron Monastery , where he pursued theological studies. From 1941 to 1946 he studied composition with Josep Barberà and from 1946 to 1950 with Cristòfor Taltabull . From 1950 he completed in-depth studies with André Marchal and Charles Koechlin in Paris.

From 1941 Gregori Estrada replaced his teacher Ildefons Civil, who was murdered at the beginning of the civil war, and worked as organist for the Montserrat monastery. As such, he preferred to perform contemporary organ works. From 1968 to 2002 Estrada also directed the Montserrat monk choir. He recorded numerous works for organ and Gregorian chant on sound carriers. As a composer, Gregori Estrada created liturgical works in the Catalan language. Among other things, he composed the responsory Oh gran mister (“Oh great mystery”).

As a musicologist, he studied the chants and dances of the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat . From 1979 to 1991 he was chairman of the Catalan Society for Musicology , a subsidiary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans . In 1992 he was appointed emeritus member of the Historical-Archaeological Section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans . He was the driving force behind the Cant per a la Litúrgia (“Singing for the Liturgy”) meetings that have been held in Montserrat Monastery since 1970. Gregori Estrada was Secretary of the Music Section at the Second Liturgical Congress in Montserrat .
