life and work

Pujol joined the Escola de Montserrat in 1903 and studied with Manuel Guzmán until 1910 . In 1914 he recognized his calling as a monk and joined the Montserrat monastery. After theological studies he deepened his musical knowledge with Josep Barberà (theory of harmony) and with VM Gibert (counterpoint and fugue). He studied Gregorian chant specifically with Gregori Suñol . From 1939 to 1950 he headed the Escolania de Montserrat . At the same time he directed the chapel of the Montserrat monastery.

During the Spanish Civil War he left the Montserrat Monastery. The Bishop of Vitoria gave him and other monks accommodation during this period. There he founded the magazine Música Sacra Española . The Estudios de canto gregoriano (Studies for Gregorian Chant) , published in 1955 in the above-mentioned journal, were also fruit of this time in the Vitoria seminary .

In 1950 he went to Rome and taught Gregorian chant at the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music . He later moved to Medellín and founded the Santa María Monastery there . Here, too, he continued his musical activity. He conducted research on musicians and composers who had emerged from the Montserrat monastery and published seven volumes of the scientific series Mestres de l'Escolania de Montserrat , which he had started. Of these works, five volumes were devoted to the vocal works of Joan Cererols and two to the instrumental music of composers such as Miguel López (1669–1723), Anselm Viola , Narcis Casanovas , Felip Rodríguez and Josep Vinyals .

He played some sacred works, especially Gregorian chant, on sound carriers. He wrote a few liturgical compositions.
