Joseph Anton Blatter
Joseph Anton Blatter (born March 8, 1745 in Visp ; † March 19, 1807 in Sion ) was the last prince-bishop in the diocese of Sion .
Life
After attending the colleges of Brig and Sitten, he studied philosophy in Lyon and theology at the University of Vienna . On February 18, 1769 he was ordained a priest in Vienna and in the same year became canon in Sion. On August 3, 1790, he was elected Bishop of Sion and received on 13 February 1791 by the Apostolic Nuncio Giuseppe Vinci the episcopal ordination . After the defeat of the Upper Valais under Ferdinand Venetz in the Battle of the Pfynwald (1799), he went into exile in Novara for a few months and after his return tried to find a compromise with the French occupying forces.
