Joseph Baltzell Showalter

Joseph Baltzell Showalter (born February 11, 1851 in Smithfield , Fayette County , Pennsylvania , †  December 3, 1932 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1903 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Showalter attended public schools in his home country as well as the Georges Creek Academy . Between 1867 and 1873 he taught in the states of West Virginia , Indiana and Illinois . In 1873 he moved to Chicora , Pennsylvania, where he worked in the petroleum and gas business. After studying medicine and being licensed as a doctor in 1884, he practiced this profession in Chicora until 1890. Then he turned back to the petroleum and gas business. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1887 and 1888 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1889 to 1892 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the congressional election of 1896 , Republican James J. Davidson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 25th  constituency of Pennsylvania, but he died before he took office on March 4, 1897. Showalter won the by-election April 20, 1897 succeeded Thomas Wharton Phillips in Congress , where he was able to complete almost three full legislative terms by March 3, 1903. During this time, the Spanish-American War of 1898 took place .

In 1902, Joseph Showalter renounced another congressional candidacy. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities. He lived first in Butler and then in Pittsburgh . Eventually he moved to the federal capital, Washington. Showalter was also involved in land development in southern Florida . He died in Washington on December 3, 1932 and was buried in Butler.
