Life

Born the son of the court painter Leopold Brunner , Brunner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1845 and specialized in landscape painting, followed by study trips. From 1861 he was a member of the Künstlerhaus. His main sponsor during this time was Archduke Ferdinand Max, who later became Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico . He later received his support from the industrialist and patron Nikolaus Dumba .

Works

Works by Brunner can be found in the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna ( Rothföhren , 1868) and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna ( Jagdhaus in Brunn, Wildalpen , 1881). Towards the end of his life, Brunner received the order for two of the wall paintings in the Natural History Museum Vienna: Masul Gorge near Meran and Gipsbruch near Schottwien am Semmering . “Still committed to old Viennese tradition, he created murals, forest, lake and river landscapes with a romantic attitude, sometimes with effective light-color contrasts. By means of narrow, seemingly random landscape sections, he achieved a very immediate, unheroic statement, which is emphasized by the loose, contourless, early impressionist painting style. "
