Joseph C. Aub

Joseph Charles Aub (born May 13, 1890 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † December 30, 1973 ) was an American medical doctor with activities in the fields of physiology , endocrinology , toxicology , gerontology and oncology .

Life

Aub earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1911 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1914 . He received his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital . During the First World War he worked in a unit for the treatment of soldiers with pneumonia and conducted research with Walter Cannon on traumatic shock . After the war he received a first professorship in applied physiology at Harvard Medical School. In 1924 he switched to a professorship in internal medicine . From 1943 to 1956 he was head (chair) of all internal medicine. Most recently, he held a research professorship. In 1956, Aub retired.

From 1928 to 1942 Aub was a doctor at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital , from 1928 to 1943 he was the successor to George Richards Minot chief physician of the Collins P. Huntington Memorial Hospital (to Massachusetts General Hospital) of the Harvard Medical School. From 1943 to 1956 he was in charge of the medical laboratories there. He sat on numerous advisory bodies for the National Research Council .

Aub worked on cancer and, together with Manfred Bowditch, on industrial poisoning , especially lead poisoning . Together with Harriet Hardy , he developed standards for the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent contamination with toxic minerals ( lead , beryllium ) in the workplace. He discovered lectins and contributed to the development of the theory that the cell surfaces of cancer cells and healthy cells are different. Together with Eugene Floyd DuBois , Aub published a table to estimate the age-dependent basal metabolic rate per square meter of body surface (Aub-Dubois table) . He is the author of more than 300 scientific publications and a biography of David Edsall .

Joseph C. Aub was married to Elizabeth Frances Cope since 1925.
