Joseph Dejean

Joseph Dejean (born August 4, 1947 in Montreal , † June 9, 1976 in or near Saintes ) was a French jazz guitarist. He is an early pioneer of free jazz in France. He also accompanied chanson singers.

Dejean released several records in the 1970s. In 1971 he played with Archie Shepp and his “Full Moon Ensemble” at the Antibes Festival (“Live in Antibes” Vol.1 and 2 for BYG, new release in 2004 for Sunspot). With the “Cohelmec Ensemble” (Jean Cohen saxophone, Evan Chandler clarinet and flute, Jean-François Canape flugelhorn, Jean-Louis Méchali drums and vibraphone, François Méchali bass) he released “Hippotigris Zebra Zebra” in 1971, “Next” in 1972 and 1974 "5. October 1974 ". In 1981 his album "Chansons sans Paroles" was published posthumously (Village 1981). There he is accompanied by Didier Levallet bass, Bernard Lubat (percussion, piano, accordion), the saxophonist Jean-Marc Padovani , Evan Chandler (flute), Jean-François Canape (flugelhorn), Olivier Chabrol (synthesizer, guitar), Alain Joule (Drums, percussion), Michel Benita (bass), the guitarists Pierre Peyras and Gérard Pansanel and Jean-Pierre Mas .

Dejean was interested in esotericism. He refused to drive himself on tours because he believed he would die in a car accident. In fact, he died in a traffic accident in 1976.

In 1975 he received the Prix ​​Django Reinhardt .

The multi-instrumentalist, band leader and composer Saheb Sarbib dedicated the album "A blessing for Joseph Dejean" to him in 1976.
