Joseph Gaspar (born November 8, 1737 in Geiselhöring ; † May 14, 1794 in Munich ) was abbot of the Neustift monastery near Freising from 1775 to 1794 .

Life

Johann Andreas Gaspar was born on November 8, 1737 in Geiselhöring . He completed the Humaniora in Regensburg and then went to the Lyceum in Freising. On November 13, 1757, he made his profession in the Premonstratensian monastery in Neustift, accepted the religious name Joseph, studied theology in Freising and was ordained a priest in Freising Cathedral in 1760. He celebrated his first mass on January 20, 1760. Soon he became a sacristan , vicar in Kleinviecht , confessor, preacher in the monastery church and vicar in Kirchdorf. Because of his business knowledge, on May 29, 1775, he was elected abbot in place of the resigned Ascanius Hainbogen and on January 6, 1788, Vicar General of the Bavarian Circary . From 1781 to 1794 he was a member of the Bavarian General Study Directorate.

He developed extensive construction activity. When on November 24, 1779 a conflagration in the monastery chicken house destroyed all stables and barns, he had completely new farm buildings built. He also had the dilapidated parish church of St. Joseph rebuilt in Allershausen , the foundation stone of which he laid on June 17, 1777 and which was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Ludwig Joseph on October 5, 1783. He changed their patronage from Martin to Josef. He is shown in the ceiling fresco. He also had the school houses built in Allershausen and Kirchdorf.

He died in Munich on May 14, 1794 gangrene . His remains were transferred to Neustift. Today they are in the Church of St. Peter and Paul. His successor was Kastulus Wohlmuth .

In the parish church of St. Joseph in Allershausen there is an epitaph with the following inscription: “Josef Abbot of the former Neustift monastery, died on May 14th 1794 in the 58th year of his age, in the 38th of his order and in the 19th of his blessed reign. It was through him that the building of this church was started in 1775 and completed in 1779. He also built the local schoolhouse in 1786. With deepest reverence and and the parish of Allershausen dedicated this monument to him with deepest gratitude. "
