Joseph Gramley (* 1970 ) is an American percussionist and composer.

After attending the Interlochen Arts Academy , Gramley studied at the University of Michigan with Michael Udow and Salvatore Rabbio , at the Tanglewood Institute , at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the Juilliard School of Music with Gordon Gottlieb and Daniel Druckman . He made his debut as soloist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and entered 1994 in Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall on.

After graduating, Gramley made recordings with the Ethos Percussion Group and traveled with them through the USA and Europe. Since 2000 he has been a member of Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble . He composed two pieces for the ensemble ( Rio-nji , UA 2006 and Blue and White , UA 2007) and worked on their albums When Strangers Meet , Beyond the Horizon , New Impossibilities and Off the Map .

He was a soloist in the performance of Tan Dun's opera The First Emporer at the Metropolitan Opera with Plácido Domingo , accompanied Pierre-Laurent Aimard on a US tour and performed with musicians such as Renée Fleming , Glen Velez , Keiko Abe , Aretha Franklin and Elton John , George Benjamin and Bright Sheng . He has also performed with the Martha Graham Dance Company , the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and the New York City Ballet , was a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician at the Spoleto Festival and worked with orchestras such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester de Lyon together.

Gramley teaches at the University of Michigan and directs its percussion ensemble. He is also the director of the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminars , which take place annually at New York's Lincoln Center .
