Joseph Jean-Baptiste Albert (born August 28, 1771 in Guillestre , † September 7, 1822 in Offenbach am Main ) was a French Général de division of the infantry .

Life

Albert joined the army on December 1, 1791 at the age of 20. He distinguished himself by great bravery in battles in the Pyrenees and was honored for this by the Directory .

The first high point of his career was his appointment as aide-de-camp from General Charles Pierre François Augereau in 1799 . As Chef de brigade Albert was stationed in Offenbach / Main at the beginning of 1802 and quartered with Peter Bernhard, a Huguenot of French origin. In April of the same year he married his daughter Lilly.

Albert fought at Austerlitz (December 2, 1805), Jena (October 14, 1806) and at Pułtusk (December 26, 1806). Under the orders of Marshal Augereau , he took part in the Battle of Preussisch Eylau (February 7/9, 1809).

Under Marshal Charles Nicolas Oudinot, he besieged Danzig and fought near Aspern (April 21/22, 1809) and Wagram (July 5/6, 1809).

Albert also took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 . He fought near Klyastitsy (July 31, 1812) and the Berezina (November 26-28, 1812). After the Battle of Bautzen (May 20/21, 1813) he was on Napoleon's staff for a short time before he again led his own command in the battle near Haynau (May 26, 1813).

During the restoration , Albert acted as aide-de-camp of Louis-Philippe I. When Napoleon had left the island of Elba and his " rule of the hundred days " began, he brought Louis-Philippe to safety in Lille and turned himself in to Marshal Édouard in Paris Adolphe Mortier available.

After the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815) he took on some administrative tasks until 1818. In the fall of 1818 he resigned from all offices and settled in Offenbach with his in-laws. Joseph Jean-Baptiste Albert died on September 7, 1822 at the age of 51 in Offenbach, where he found his final resting place. He is buried in the old cemetery in Offenbach .
