Joseph Joachim von Schnizer (born March 19, 1792 in Altdorf-Weingarten , † April 30, 1870 in Stuttgart ; also Joseph Joachim von Schnitzer ) was a German artist and politician .

Life

Schnizer turned to art at an early age and moved to the new Munich Art Academy in 1808 . In 1812 he was drafted into the army in Württemberg . There, King Friedrich allowed him to continue his military training under the court painter Johann Baptist Seele , who was known as an excellent soldier draftsman. At the Stuttgart art exhibition in 1812 he was represented, among other things, with the oil painting Achilles on the seashore .

During the campaign of 1813 Schnizer was promoted to officer . He was then involved in the Wars of Liberation in 1814 and 1815 and was honored several times for his bravery, but then left the army in favor of art. With the depiction of the battle of Epinal , he caught the attention of King Wilhelm von Württemberg , who was immortalized as a commander himself and bought the picture in 1820. The king ordered the representation of the Battle of Brienne as a counterpart, and a little later the storming of Sens and the Battle of Montereau . Schnizer was appointed court painter .

On April 30, 1832 Schnizer took part in the first convention of the liberal movement party of Württemberg in Boll and signed the final declaration in which freedom of association was demanded and against the paralysis of constitutional public life. Schnizer also represented the liberal opposition as a member of the state parliament for Biberach in the second chamber of the Württemberg estates in 1833. As a result, he lost his position as court painter at the Württemberg court. From this time on he mainly appeared as a portrait and battle painter.

Schnizer created various battle and portrait pictures during his time. A portrait of Wilhelm von Württemberg painted in 1821 , depicted as a general with binoculars and a map standing under a tree, was published by the Boisserée brothers and could be seen in almost every inn and in many private houses in Württemberg at the time.

His battle pictures are known for the great clarity of the battle process. Furthermore, he played a leading role in the design of the reliefs for the anniversary column on Stuttgart's Schloßplatz .
