Joseph Jones

Joseph Jones (* 1727 in King George County , Colony of Virginia , †  October 28, 1805 in Fredericksburg , Virginia ) was an American politician who took part in the Continental Congress as a delegate from Virginia .

Joseph Jones was the uncle of James Monroe , the fifth President of the United States . He began to be politically active during the British colonial era and was a member of the House of Burgesses , the parliament of Virginia. At the beginning of the American Revolution, he worked in 1775 in the Safety Committee ( Committee of Safety ); the following year he served as a delegate to the Virginia Constitutional Convention. In the state militia he rose to major general.

Jones was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives from 1776, 1777, 1780, and 1781, and from 1783 to 1785 . He was also sent in 1777 to the Continental Congress, which met mainly in Philadelphia and temporarily in Baltimore . From 1780 to 1783 he also took part in its meetings in Philadelphia. Jones was also a lawyer and was appointed judge of the Virginia General Court on January 23, 1778 ; in October 1779 he resigned from this post. A new appeal to this court took place on November 19, 1789. The year before he had belonged to the State Convention of Virginia, which ratified the United States' Declaration of Independence . Jones died in Fredericksburg in October 1805.
