Joseph Kutter (born December 12, 1894 in Luxembourg ; † January 2, 1941 ibid) was a Luxembourg painter .

Life

Kutter grew up in Luxembourg City , where his father worked as a photographer . After finishing school in Luxembourg, he attended arts and crafts schools in Strasbourg and Munich from 1911 to 1914 . In 1915 he worked for a glass painter in Cologne for two months . From 1917-18 he spent a few months at the Art Academy in Munich.

Kutter stayed in Munich until 1924, where he married in 1919. His painting was influenced by the works of Cézanne and the German Expressionists during this period . In 1924 Kutter returned to Luxembourg, where he lived from then on. This year he was awarded the Prix Grand-Duc Adolphe . In the same year he took part in the "Salon du Cercle Artistique" ( exhibition of the art association ), but received little recognition. In 1926 the first positive reviews appeared in Belgium .

In 1927, Kutter and other artists founded the Luxembourg Secession , which held its first exhibition in the same year. In 1930 he took part in the Paris "Salon d'Autommne" ( autumn exhibition ). Kutter was celebrated in France and Belgium, while in Luxembourg it was rejected. Therefore, from 1930 onwards, he no longer showed his pictures publicly in his home country.

From 1933 Kutter was counted among the degenerate artists in Germany . However, his pictures continued to be shown successfully in Paris, Brussels and Antwerp . 1936–37 he painted two large-format pictures, "Luxembourg" and "Clervaux", for the Luxembourg pavilion at the "Exposition Internationale" ( International Exhibition ) in Paris.

During this time Kutter fell ill with an enigmatic disease that was never clearly diagnosed. During the last years of his life he suffered from severe pain. On January 2, 1941, he died of a stroke.
