Joseph Michael Sullivan

Joseph Michael Sullivan (born March 23, 1930 in Brooklyn , † June 7, 2013 in East Meadow, New York ) was an American auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Brooklyn .

Life

Joseph Michael Sullivan, of a family of eleven children, attended Manhattan College in New York's Bronx and entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, NY in 1950 . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy and was ordained a priest on June 2, 1956 . He served in the pastoral care of the Diocese of Brooklyn and completed a master's degree in social work at Fordham University (1961) and public administration at New York University (1971). In 1968 he became director of the Catholic Charities in Brooklyn and Queens.

Pope John Paul II named him Titular Bishop of Suliana and Auxiliary Bishop in Brooklyn on October 4, 1980 . He received episcopal ordination from the Bishop of Brooklyn, Francis J. Mugavero , on November 24 of that year; Co- consecrators were Charles Richard Mulrooney , Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, and John Joseph Snyder , Bishop of Saint Augustine . On May 12, 2005 Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement. Sullivan was seriously injured in a car accident on May 30, 2013 on the Long Island Expressway and died a week later from the consequences of the accident at Nassau University Medical Center .

Sullivan was involved in numerous Catholic charities, particularly in Brooklyn and Queens. He was instrumental in founding St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Centers . He was chairman of the Social Development and World Peace Department of the US Bishops' Conference.
