Joseph Patrick Dougherty
Joseph Patrick Dougherty (born January 11, 1905 in Kansas City , Kansas , † July 9, 1970 ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Dougherty was the diocesan bishop of the Yakima diocese .
Life
Joseph Dougherty received his college education from the University of Portland . He graduated from the Catholic Saint Patrick's Seminary and University in Menlo Park , California . On June 14, 1930, he received the sacrament of ordination . Around 1930 he came to Washington , where he found employment as a professor at the Catholic St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore . In 1934 he became Vice Chancellor and in 1942 Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Seattle . At the same time he was the director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith .
Pope Pius XII appointed Dougherty on July 9, 1951 bishop of the diocese of Yakima, which he founded shortly before. On September 26, 1951, he received the sacrament of episcopal ordination from the hands of Archbishop Thomas Arthur Connolly . Co-consecrators were Bishops Charles Daniel White and Hugh Aloysius Donohoe .
Dougherty was a participant in the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and 1965 .
After 18 years of pastoral work in Yakima, Dougherty resigned as diocesan bishop on February 5, 1969. Pope Paul VI simultaneously appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and titular bishop of Altium .
He died around a year and a half later, in July 1970, at the age of 65.
