Joseph Sabine

Joseph Sabine (born June 6, 1770 in Tewin , Hertfordshire , † January 24, 1837 in London ) was an English tax clerk and naturalist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Sabine ".

Joseph Sabine was the eldest son of the eponymous Joseph Sabine.

Sabine was a barrister and as such worked in the legal system until 1808. From 1808 to 1835 he was "Inspector-General of assessed taxes" and thus a tax officer.

But Sabine was also interested in nature research; he devoted himself to botany and ornithology . He was one of the founders of the London Horticultural Society (now the Royal Horticultural Society ). From 1816 to 1830 he was secretary of this society. Sabine was also treasurer of the Zoological Society of London ; He was also a member of the Linnean Society of London and a founding member of the Athenaeum Club, founded in 1823 .

Sabine died on January 24, 1837 in Mill Street, Hanover Square, London. He was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery , London.

Joseph Sabine's younger brother Edward Sabine (1788-1883) was an astronomer and naturalist.

Honors

In 1799 Sabine was elected as a member (" Fellow ") of the Royal Society . In 1825, the Swiss botanist Augustin Pyrame de Candolle named the plant genus Sabinea from the legume family (Fabaceae) in his honor.
