Joseph Seipelt

Joseph Seipelt (born November 5, 1787 in Ragendorf , Wieselburg County ; † February 21, 1847 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ), composer and choir director.

Life

Seipelt first sang in the choir of the Theater an der Wien , later took lessons from Antonio Salieri and then made a very successful debut as bass in Lemberg . Engagements in Sibiu , Timisoara and from 1809 to 1812 in Linz followed . After working at various Hungarian and Galician opera houses, including the Deutsches Theater in Budapest , he returned to the Theater an der Wien, where he sang all the major roles in his field and, after leaving the stage, was still active as choir director. He composed mainly vocal quartets for male voices. On May 7, 1824, he sang the bass part in the memorable world premiere of Beethoven's 9th Symphony . On April 23, 1829 he was made an honorary citizen of Vienna.

His daughter Josephine (1816–1841) was a well-known pianist and student of Franz Jakob Freystädtler . His daughter Amalie was a singer at the Kärntnertortheater .
