Joseph T. Glatthaar

Joseph T. Glatthaar (* 1956 ) is an American military historian .

Life

Glatthaar graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in 1978, from Rice University with a master's degree in 1981 and received his doctorate in 1983 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison . Glatthaar taught at the US Army Command and General Staff College , the US Army War College ( Harold Keith Johnson Chair of Military History 1991/92), the United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Houston . He is the Stephenson Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and heads the Peace, War and Defense curriculum at the university.

He dealt with the American Civil War ( Robert Edward Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia , the Civil War in the West, the relationship between generals in the Civil War and the relationship between black soldiers and their white officers) and American military history , for example the American War of Independence ( Oneida - Allies of the Americans). From 2011 to 2013 he was President of the Society for Military History .

In 2013 he received The Edwin H. Simmons Award and in 2015 the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize of the Society for Military History.
