Edward M. Coffman

Edward Mackenzie Coffman (born January 27, 1929 in Hopkinsville , Kentucky ) is an American military historian . He is best known for his book on US involvement in World War I and books on the US professional army, including social issues. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison .

Coffman studied at the University of Kentucky with a bachelor's degree in 1951, a master's degree in 1955 and a doctorate in 1959. From 1951 to 1953 he did his military service as an officer in the US Army in Japan and Korea . He taught from 1957 as an instructor at Memphis State University and from 1961 to his retirement in 1992 as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1986/87 he held the Harold Keith Johnson Chair of Military History at the US Army Military History Institute .

He was assistant to Forrest Pogue on his official biography of George C. Marshall and was visiting professor / lecturer at Kansas State University , the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy ( Harmon Memorial Lectures in Military History ), the Army War College (Brooks E. Kleber Memorial Readings in Military History) and the Command and General Staff College .

He was president of the Society for Military History from 1983 to 1985 and served on the Department of the Army's history committee . Received high civil awards from the US Army and was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 1990 he was awarded the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize . In 2010 he received the Spencer Tucker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Military History ( ABC-CLIO ).
