Richard H. Kohn

Richard H. Kohn (born December 29, 1940 ) is an American military historian .

Life

Kohn studied history at Harvard University (AB 1962) and the University of Wisconsin – Madison (MS 1964 and PhD 1968).

From 1968 to 1971 he was Assistant Professor of History at the City College of New York . In 1971 he moved to Rutgers University , most recently as a professor . In 1980/81 he was visiting professor ( Harold Keith Johnson Chair of Military History ) at the US Army Military History Institute . In 1982 he gave the Eleazer Wood Memorial Military History Lecture at Bowling Green State University . He was then head of the Office of Air Force History and chief historian of the United States Air Force . From 1985 to 1990 he was an adjunct professor at Army War College. In 1991 he was a visiting scholar in Strategic Studies at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies .

He was then Professor (Peace, War, and Defense) in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and headed the Triangle Institute for Security Studies. From 1998 to 2000 he was Professor of Public Policy Studies at Duke University . In 1999 he gave the Harmon Memorial Lecture in Military History at the United States Air Force Academy . In 2004 he was the George C. Marshall Lecturer in Military History (Society for Military History / George C. Marshall Foundation). In 2005 he was the Herbert S. Schell Lecture in American History at the University of South Dakota . In 2006/07 he held the Bradley Chair of Strategic Leadership at Army War College and Dickinson College . In 2007 he gave the James J. Whalen Lecture at Army War College.

He was an advisor to numerous organizations. In 1978 he was a juror for the Pulitzer Prize for History . From 1977 to 1987 he was a member of the Executive Council of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society . From 1981 to 1984 he advised the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command . From 1989 to 1993 he was President of the Society for Military History . In 1992 he became a member of the American Antiquarian Society . He was also active in the American Historical Association and the World War II Studies Association . He is / was a member of the editorial boards of the Papers of William Livingston and Papers of George Washington .
