Carol Reardon

Carol Reardon (b. 1951) is an American military historian and professor at Pennsylvania State University .

Reardon studied biology from Allegheny College with a bachelor's degree in 1974 and then history from the University of South Carolina with a master's degree in 1980; she received her PhD in history from the University of Kentucky in 1987 . She then worked on the project to publish the writings of Henry Clay at the University of Kentucky, was Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Georgia in Athens from 1989 and Assistant Professor at Penn State University from 1991 , where she was Associate Professor in 1996 and in 2006 Became a professor of military history. Since 2010 she has been the George Winfree Professor of American History there.

In 1993/94 she held the Harold Keith Johnson Chair of Military History at the US Army Military History Institute and in 2011/12 at the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks , Pennsylvania . From 1997 to 2004 she also taught at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico and in 1999/2000 she was visiting professor at the United States Military Academy in West Point . She has been Scholar in Residence at Penn State's George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center since 1999 .

She is particularly concerned with the Civil War and wrote a book on the decisive attack by George Pickett (Pickett's Charge) at the Battle of Gettysburg , highlighting various memories, distortions and falsifications in the accounts of the North and South. She also deals with the Vietnam War (although in a study of a naval special unit in Vietnam in 1972 she also included connections to their families in the USA), the influence of military history in officer training in the USA, and the relationship between memory and history to the civil war.

Reardon regularly conducts Military Staff Rides (field lectures for military schools) on the battlefields of the Civil War. She was President of the Society for Military History from 2005 to 2009 . In 2009 she received the Victor Gondos Award from the Society for Military History.
