Joseph Winkler (theologian)

Joseph Winkler (born May 14, 1809 in Gelfingen , † January 31, 1886 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic theologian and canon lawyer .

Life

Winkler attended the Lucerne high school and lyceum from 1825 to 1831 . He then went to study theology at the universities of Tübingen , Gießen , Bonn and Munich . In 1834 he was ordained a priest in Solothurn . He then worked as a teacher at the Beromünster Abbey School.

Winkler was appointed professor of morality and church history at the Lucerne Theological College in 1838 . In 1841 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in canon law, and from 1845 he was a full professor in this field. In 1872 he was awarded the doctoral degree (Dr. theol.) By the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1878 he retired from teaching.

In addition to teaching, Winkler worked as a canon at the St. Leodegar monastery in Lucerne from 1845 . In 1848 he was elected episcopal commissioner for the diocese of Basel in the canton of Lucerne . From 1871 to 1875 he was a member of the Lucerne Education Council, and in 1872 he was appointed papal treasurer of honor . In 1885 he retired completely.

The Lucerne city president and federal politician Johann Winkler was his brother.
