Marie Charles Joseph d'Ursel, 6th Duke d'Ursel (born July 3, 1848 in Brussels , † November 15, 1903 in Strombeek-Bever , Flemish Brabant , Belgium ) was a Belgian politician of the Catholic Party and President of the Senate .

biography

Joseph d'Ursel came from the noble family d'Ursel , whose ancestors Conrad Albert d'Ursel , general in Spanish service, was awarded the title of 1st Duke of d'Ursel in 1716. His grandfather, Charles-Joseph d'Ursel, was not only mayor of Brussels but also Minister for Waterways and Public Works and Senator. After the death of his father Leo (Léon) d'Ursel, he became 6th Duke d'Ursel in 1878.

He himself initially studied law and became a diplomat after receiving his doctorate in law . In 1872 he married Antonine de Mun, a sister of the French politician , reformer and member of the Académie française from 1897 to 1914 Albert de Mun .

In 1878 he became mayor of Hingene and retained this position until his death. At the same time he was also governor of the province of Hainaut between 1885 and 1889 and then from 1889 to 1903 a member of the Senate .

He was last President of the Senate from November 14, 1899 until his death.

His sister Marie Sophie d'Ursel (1851–1932) was married to the Saxon Count Karl Heinrich Wolf Wilhelm Franz von Schönburg-Glauchau (1832–1898) and raised Joachim von Schönburg-Glauchau (1873–1943) , whose son was first Marriage. This in turn was the brother-in-law of the Austrian heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este .

His son Léon Léopold d'Ursel was Belgian ambassador to the Holy See from 1919 to 1921 , the nephew Prince Ferdinand de Croÿ (1867-1958), son of his sister Marie de Croÿ , a Catholic priest and papal diplomat.
