Joseph of Szalay

Joseph von Szalay (* around 1806 ; † 1860 ?) Was an Austrian pianist and composer .

Life

Joseph von Szalay was a student of Johann Nepomuk Hummel , Emanuel Aloys Förster and Carl Czerny and already gave concerts as a young piano virtuoso. For example in October 1816 in Leipzig or 1817 in Vienna in the Hôtel de Saxe. On the occasion of a Vienna concert in April 1818, his talent was praised, from which much was expected. Later Szalay also worked as a piano teacher and published compositions for the piano.

More precise dates and further living conditions are not known.

  • Variation in C for the piano forte. 50 variations on a waltz by Anton Diabelli for piano.
    Szalay was one of the 50 composers who Anton Diabelli had suggested to contribute a variation on a self-composed waltz, which was then published under the title " Vaterländischer Künstlerverein "; Beethoven processed the theme in his own Diabelli variations .
