Josip Kleczek (born February 22, 1923 in Gornja Sanica , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † January 5, 2014 ) was a Czech solar physicist, astronomer and author .

Live and act

Kleczek was born in a small municipality in Ključ in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. His mother, a Czech, returned to their home village of Štěpánov with her son in the late 1920s . After attending school in Štěpánov, Kleczek studied mathematics, physics and astronomy at Charles University until 1949 . He then worked at the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences in the Ondřejov observatory , where he specialized in solar physics.

Kleczek was a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and President of the Commission for Astronomy Education. He was the founder of the International School for Young Astronomers, supported by UNESCO and the IAU, and headed it for 20 years. He was also chairman of the Sun Section of the Czechoslovak Astronomical Society. He taught as a lecturer a. a. at the Charles University.

Together with Helena Kleczková, he created the four-volume specialist dictionary Space Sciences Dictionary , which was also published in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.

Honors

Kleczek was made an honorary citizen of Štěpánov nad Svratkou in 2002. The Kraj Vysočina awarded the Glass Medal in 2009 . Kleczek is also the only one to have received the Littera astronomica award from the Czech Astronomical Society several times . In 2002, he was honored with the Littera astronomica for his literary life's work in the field of astronomy . His book Život se Sluncem a ve vesmíru was awarded the Littera astronomica in 2011 .

The asteroid of the outer main belt (2781) discovered at the Kleť Observatory Kleczek was named after him.
