Jost Clodt von Jürgensburg (also Klot, Latinized "Justus Claudius" ; * 1517 probably in Reval , † after June 1572 in Riga ) was a Baltic diplomat , Polish minister and statesman in the Baltic region . He came from the German-Baltic noble family Clodt von Jürgensburg .

Origin and family

His father Rolof Clodt, who came from Germany , immigrated to Reval in 1515, his mother Grete Clodt was a von Letmaten. Jost was married to Anna von Wigand (von Wigant), their son was Stephan Clodt von Jürgensburg.

Career

Jost C. studied at the University of Wittenberg and became Magister utr in 1537. jur. (Master of both rights). From 1550 to 1560 he was council syndic for Reval and represented the affairs of the Teutonic Order . Thereupon he was enfeoffed by the Landmeister of the Teutonic Order in Livonia Heinrich von Galen on September 1, 1562 with the manor Walküll. Gotthard Kettler , the first Duke of Courland and Semgallia , extended this lending to two other villages. In his capacity as leader of the Danish party in Estonia he was often delegated to Denmark and to the " German Hanseatic League " by the Estonian knighthood and the city council of Revals . In 1560 he decided to join the former master of the Teutonic Order Gotthart Kettler and the Polish party in Livonia. He was not insignificantly involved in Kettler's subjection to Poland. After the submission comparison with Poland, he was appointed to the Supreme Council of Duke Gotthard Kettler in 1561 and enfeoffed on March 22, 1561 with the Jürgensburg Order Castle. In this function he became the "co-founder of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia". From 1562 to 1566 he was chancellor and belonged to the circle of the four councilors of this duchy. He was then appointed Royal Polish State Secretary and in 1568/69 he was envoy to Stockholm . 1570 led in a further diplomatic task to Stockholm to the royal court of John III. As an authorized minister, he took part in the Szczecin Peace Congress in 1570 and was considered a peacemaker between Sweden and Denmark.
