The musical legacy

The Master Musicians of Jajouka at TFF.Rudolstadt 2011

Joujouka is internationally known as the hometown of the traditional Sufi musicians Master Musicians of Jajouka and of Bachir Attar , who introduced this music into world music . Village culture drew the attention of writers Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs in the 1950s because of its strong trance elements. Brion Gysin , who was introduced to the musicians, promoted this idea and linked it to the village Boujeloud Festival, where a young man in a goat skin danced to the music. In 1967 and 1968 Brian Jones , the co-founder of the Rolling Stones , visited the village and took the musicians on. The LP Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka emerged from the tapes and was released in 1971 on Rolling Stones Records in a psychedelic mix . This publication made the music of the ensemble internationally known for the first time and other musicians, including Ornette Coleman and Robert Palmer , later also Bill Laswell , who performed or recorded with the musicians of the village. In September 2013 Howe Records released the compilation The Road to Jajouka , on which the music of the Master Musicians was remixed and reinterpreted. Those involved include a. John Zorn , Flea , Marc Ribot , Ornette Coleman, Medeski, Martin & Wood , Howard Shore , Bill Laswell and Jim Jarmusch (author of the liner notes ). All proceeds from the sale of the album will be donated to the Jajouka Foundation.
