Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons ( Chinese  西遊·降魔篇  /  西游·降魔篇 ) is a 2013 published Chinese Fantasy - Comedy directed by Stephen Chow . action

The film tells the story of the monk Tang Sanzang before the storyline of Journey to the West , who is in search of enlightenment. Sanzang, a self-proclaimed demon hunter, comes into conflict with the demon hunter Duan during a fight with a water demon. While this uses brute tactics against the demons, Sanzang tries with nursery rhymes to bring out the good in the demons. Although the two succeed in defeating the water demon, Duan makes fun of Tang's more non-violent methods and disappears.

On his way further he visits a restaurant, which turns out to be the illusion of a pig demon. This lures unsuspecting travelers into the trap and enslaves them. Once again, the demon hunter Duan intervenes in the action, but is increasingly impressed by Tang's selfless behavior. The demon can be overwhelmed for a brief moment, but then turns into a giant boar and brings the restaurant to collapse on its escape. Duan finally tries to get close to Tang, but the latter takes flight, fearing that a romance could hinder his search for enlightenment .

In order to finally defeat the pig demon, Sanzang's master gives him the task of searching for the monkey king Sun Wukong and bringing him under his control. He has been incarcerated in an unknown location in a prison for 500 years. With the help of Duan, the Monkey King can finally be found and the Pig Demon defeated. The Monkey King, however, seizes the opportunity and frees himself from Tang's control. In the ensuing fight, the Monkey King kills Duan and, in desperation, Tang conjures up Buddha . This defeats the Monkey King and he can be locked in his prison again.

Tang returns to his master and tells him that the desperation and grief over the loss of Duan paved the way for him to enlightenment. His master now instructs him to travel west and find the Leiyin Temple. In the last scene of the film, Tang crosses a desert and draws an image of Duan in the sand.
