Joyce Carey OBE (born March 30, 1898 in Kensington , London , as Joyce Lilian Lawrence , † February 28, 1993 in Westminster , London) was a British actress .

life and career

Joyce Carey was the daughter of the well-known theater actors Gerald Lawrence (1873-1957) and Lilian Braithwaite (1873-1948), the couple divorced in 1905. She followed her parents into the acting business in 1916 and remained connected to them for more than 70 years. She became known in particular for her appearances in the works of Noël Coward , with whom she also had a close friendship in private. In Ghost Comedy and Encounter (both 1945), the successful film adaptations of Coward's plays by David Lean , she was seen in prominent supporting roles. She often played eccentric or quirky female characters in both films and on stage, both in light comedies and in the classic works of Shakespeare . Most recently she stood in front of the camera in 1987 for the television film Number 27 , directed by Michael Palin . Her work for film and television includes around 90 productions.

Joyce Carey, who was unmarried, was appointed to the Order of the British Empire in 1982 . She died of a heart attack in her sleep around a month before her 95th birthday.
