Jozef Šesták (born November 9, 1945 in Michalovce ) is a Slovak diplomat and has been Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Istanbul since December 2009 .

Life

He spent part of his youth in Košice . He studied at the University of Economics in Bratislava and after his graduation he received the scientific title CSc. He was a founding member of the AIESEC organization in Slovakia, the first vice-president of AIESEC Czechoslovakia and the first president of AIESEC at the University of Economics in Bratislava (1965–1967). He was the first vice-president of the Slovak Student Association (ZVS 1968-1969), which organized student memorial manifestations in Bradlo and Devín (1968).

Working as a diplomat

Czechoslovakia

Initially he worked at the Ministry of Trade of the Slovak Republic, then at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Trade in Prague. From 1974 to 1979 he was a representative of the Economic Council at the Embassy of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (ČSSR) in Washington, DC ( USA ). Later he worked at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the ČSSR in Prague. He progressively held the positions of the embassy council at the permanent representation of the Czechoslovakia to the international organizations in Vienna, furthermore that of the deputy head of the delegation of the Czechoslovakia during the negotiations on the reduction of armed forces and equipment in Central Europe (1983–1988). Afterwards he was an expert in the Czechoslovak delegation for negotiations on the resignation of Soviet troops from the territory of the Czechoslovakia (1990). He held the position of Head of Delegation with the diplomatic degree of Ambassador and in the position of Ambassador during the international negotiations on the Open Skies Treaty in Canada and the Hungarian Republic (1990).

Slovakia

After the appointment of the government of the Slovak Republic, he was external advisor to the first deputy prime minister on foreign policy and foreign trade issues (1990–1991). From 1994–1998 he was State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic. One of his undeniable diplomatic merits is his work as head of the negotiating team of the Slovak Republic, which successfully negotiated the conclusion of the Treaty on Good Neighborhood and Friendly Cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the Hungarian Republic (March 19, 1995). He worked as a vice chairman of the Government Council of the Slovak Republic for Export, was also a member of the Government Council for the integration of Slovakia into the European Union and a member of the Government Council for the accession of the Slovak Republic to the OECD . He played a particularly valuable role in the position of head of the negotiating team of the Slovak government in negotiations with the Hungarian Republic on the possibility of an out-of-court settlement of the dispute over the Gabčíkovo- Nagymaros waterworks (1996–1997), as well as during the accession negotiations in Slovakia the OECD, EU and NATO (1995–1998). He was the negotiator for the accession of the Slovak Republic to the EU (1997-1998). At all of these posts he not only demonstrated his diplomatic experience, skill and perspective, but always adhered to the positions of Slovakia, which represented the national-state interests of the Slovak Republic. Jozef Šesták is a determined man of action, who has always been one of the top diplomats in Slovakia through his actions and appearance. He became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to the Republic of Austria (1998), then Ambassador, Main Advisory Board (2002–2009). He is the author of the peace project for crisis management in the Middle East , which he presented to the experts (in the Council of Europe ) for the Middle East and the Austrian EU Presidency in Istanbul (2006). His wife Anna Šestáková, née Chrobáková, niece of the writer Dobroslav Chrobák , comes from Hybe and is an expert on diplomatic protocol. The couple have two daughters.

Jozef Šesták has been at the post of Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Istanbul since December 2009.
