Juan Antonio Ipiña Iza (born August 23, 1912 in Ortuella , Bizkaia , † September 7, 1974 in Bilbao , Spain) was a Spanish football player and coach .
Career as a player
Juan Antonio Ipiña Iza grew up playing at SD Erandio Club . Real Sociedad acquired him and made his debut in the Primera División in 1933 . In 1935 he moved to Atlético Madrid , but after the season, like all players, had to hang up his football boots for three years because of the Spanish Civil War . After the war-related break, he went to Real Madrid in 1939 and completed a total of 232 appearances there by the end of his active football career. With the Merengues he won the Copa del Rey in 1946 and 1947 and in 1947 also the Copa Eva Duarte , the predecessor of today's Spanish Supercup .
Career as a coach
He began his coaching career in 1950 at Real Valladolid . After two years he took over the 1st team from Real Madrid , but was only supposed to lead their fortunes for one season. Only after a five-year hiatus did he return to the coaching bench at Sevilla FC in 1958 . After only one year he left Andalusia and went to his last place of work, Athletic Bilbao , where he ended his coaching career in 1962.
