Juan Luria
Juan Luria , also Giovanni Luria , actually Johannes Lorie or Johannes Lorié (* December 20, 1862 in Warsaw , † May 21, 1943 in the Sobibor extermination camp ) was a Polish opera singer (baritone) and singing teacher.
Life
Luria studied singing with Josef Gänsbacher in Vienna . He made his operatic debut in 1884 at the Vienna Court Opera . In 1885 he was engaged at the court theater in Stuttgart. In the 1890/91 season he sang Count Nevers in the Huguenots , Don Pizarro in Fidelio , Kurwenal in Tristan and Isolde and Alberich and Gunther im Ring at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . From 1891 he sang at several Italian opera houses, for example in 1897 at La Scala in Milan as Wotan in the Italian premiere of Die Walküre . This was followed by guest appearances in Berlin , Elberfeld , Vienna, Munich and Brussels .
After his last appearance at the Berlin Theater des Westens in 1908 , Luria devoted himself to his work as a singing teacher in Charlottenburg . His students included Elfriede Marherr (1888–1973), Käthe Heidersbach-Källe (1897–1979), Michael Bohnen , Dela Gotthelft and Gotthelf Pistor (1887–1947). In Berlin he became a member of the Victoria Masonic Lodge .
When the repression against Jews increased in size after the National Socialists came to power, Luria fled to the Netherlands in 1937 , where he taught in Amsterdam and The Hague . After the occupation of the Netherlands by the Wehrmacht in May 1940, Luria was interned in the Westerbork Jewish transit camp, from there deported to the Sobibor extermination camp on May 18, 1943 and murdered on arrival.
Commemoration
On November 12, 2013 , a stumbling block was laid in front of his former home in Berlin-Charlottenburg , Bleibtreustraße 44 .
