Juan Mayr Maldonado (born May 27, 1952 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian photographer , environmental activist and politician. From 2011 until the end of July 2016 he was the Colombian ambassador to Germany. Since December 2016 he has headed the Colombian government's negotiating group for the dialogue with the guerrilla ELN .

Life

After being in the two years Kogui had lived, he founded the 1986 Foundation Fundación Pro-Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta . He managed to get the government , the indigenous peoples , scientists, farmers, conservatives and various regional paramilitary groups together around one table. After four years of work, the foundation was able to start a project to preserve and develop the region.

Among other successes, in June 1994 the foundation succeeded in returning a total of 19,500 hectares to the Colombian government to indigenous peoples.

From 1993 to 1996 Mayr was Vice President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 1993, he also received the Goldman Environmental Prize for his contributions to protecting the biodiversity of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta .

In 1998, he was the then President Andrés Pastrana as Environment Minister of Colombia appointed. He served in that position for four years.

By decree 708 of the Colombian Foreign Ministry of April 9, 2011, Juan Mayr was appointed as Colombian ambassador to Germany by the President of the Republic , Juan Manuel Santos Calderón , on September 30, 2011.

Most recently Mayr reported in a lecture on November 6, 2012 at the Ibero-American Culture Days 2012 in Stuttgart on the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta , and in it also on the living conditions of the indigenous people of the Kogui .
