biography

After attending school, she studied education at New York University .

In 1969 she published her first book, The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo . Her third book Are you there, God? It's me, Margaret (1970) applauded her honest approach to the onset of puberty and her natural, if simple, writing style. On the other hand, this led to attempts to reduce the number of copies in their subsequent books. Her clarity also brought her into conflict with parents, but she, on the other hand, had a remarkable relationship with her readers and ignored confrontations.

Her other works, in which she dealt with topics such as menstruation , masturbation , divorce, and bullying , include:

  • Then Again, Maybe I Won't (1971)
  • It's not the End of the World (1972)
  • Deenie (1973)
  • Blubber (1974)
  • Forever (1975)
  • Superfudge (1980)
  • Here's to You, Rachel Robinson (1993)

She received the 1996 Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association for great merits in youth literature ; In 2015 she was awarded the Regina Medal .
