Jules André (born April 19, 1807 in Paris ; † August 17, 1869 there ) was a French landscape painter .

life and work

André, born in Paris in 1807, was a student of the painters André Jolivard and Louis Etienne Watelet . He later went on an extensive study trip through southern France and the Pyrenees .

In 1831 André was invited to take part in the major exhibition at the Paris Salon . At the age of 27 he made his debut there with a work that was praised by the official art critics.

André later toured Belgium and Germany , where he - according to his own statements - was particularly impressed by the Rhine . Between 1845 and 1856 he worked for the Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres ; even in the difficult time of the February revolution of 1848 he was in wages and bread.

The painter Jules André died on August 17, 1869 in Paris at the age of 65.

All of André's artistic oeuvre is characterized by a realism that was not necessarily common at the time . Some genre scenes are always atmospheric; sometimes even with a dose of romance. His commissioned work for Sèvres was in no way inferior to the other works. His works are now in the possession of art museums in Toulouse and Beaune .
