Jules Martin

Jules Martin (born February 27, 1824 in Vevey , † May 21, 1875 in Geneva , resident in Grandson ) was a liberal - left Swiss politician .

Life

Martin studied law at the University of Lausanne from 1842 to 1845 and was admitted to the bar in 1849 . From 1846 to 1850 he was a substitute for the public prosecutor in Vevey and from 1850 to 1860 he was an independent lawyer in Lausanne . He was also a substitute judge at the federal court from 1854 to 1872.

In 1849 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud and had a seat there until 1860. During his tenure he was President of the Grand Council in 1850, 1852/53, 1855 and 1857. He represented the canton of Vaud in the Council of States from 1851 to 1852 and was elected to the National Council two years later in parliamentary elections in 1854 . There he was President of the National Council in 1856 and left the Grand Chamber in 1860.

After his active political career, he was on the board of the Swiss Trade and Industry Association from 1870 to 1872 and settled in Geneva in 1860 , where he ran the branch of the Rinsoz & Ormond cigar factory for several years . Furthermore, Martin was a member of the academic society Belles-Lettres in 1842 (its president in 1843) and was an honorary member of the Zofingia from 1842 to 1845.

In the Swiss Army he was a major in the infantry .
