Julius Becker (composer)

Constantin Julius Becker (born February 5, 1811 in Freiberg ; † February 26, 1859 in Oberlößnitz , today Radebeul ) was a German composer , music theorist and author of musical novels.

Live and act

Becker studied in Freiberg with August Ferdinand Anacker and in Leipzig . Becker graduated with a Dr. phil. from. In 1837 he became an employee of the New Magazine for Music published by Robert Schumann . Becker was also temporarily involved in the management of the Freiberg Singing Academy.

At the beginning of the 1840s, Becker moved to Dresden to make a living there as a single teacher. He created various choral works, songs and the opera The Storming of Belgrade , which premiered on May 21, 1848 in Leipzig. Becker also published several musical novels and textbooks.

Becker lived and worked in the last years of his life in Oberlößnitz , where he owned a winery. Becker gave numerous benefit concerts in the hall of the Goldene Weintraube inn , which were organized for the benefit of the Association for Healing and Natural History and the hospital in the Stone House , which it supports . Becker died on February 26, 1859 on his estate.
