Life

Julius Disselhoff was born the son of a tax officer in Soest. He was the older brother of August Disselhoff . Due to a professional transfer of his father to Marhafen , the young Julius was placed in the care of his maternal uncle. In Soest he began to attend school and from 1837 switched to high school. Disselhoff stayed there until the summer of 1840, when he moved to Arnsberg with his parents, as his father was transferred there for professional reasons. He was confirmed on September 4, 1842 . After graduating from high school, he began studying philosophy and literary history in Halle with the aim of becoming a professor of literary history. After he met August Tholuck and was significantly influenced by him, he switched to the subject of theology. During his studies he joined the student union Salingia zu Halle in 1848 . In 1850 he went to Theodor Fliedner in Kaiserswerth as an assistant and tutor . In 1852 he worked in the rescue house for boys in Neinstedt am Harz. In 1853 he became a pastor in Schermbeck near Wesel. After marrying Fliedner's eldest daughter Luise, in December 1855 he moved to the Kaiserswerth Diakonissenanstalt as a pastor , of which he took over as Fliedner's successor in 1865. In order to organize the work of the deaconesses in the hospitals, he traveled to the battlefields in Schleswig and Holstein (1864), Bohemia (1866) and France (1870). For 30 years he was chairman of the Kaiserswerth general conference of deaconess houses .

With his work The present situation of the cretins, idiots and idiots in the Christian countries (1857) Disselhoff contributed significantly to the opening of the Hephata institution (Mönchengladbach) in 1858. He also published poetry under the pseudonym Julius von Soest .
