Ludwig Höpfner
Ludwig Julius Friedrich Höpfner (born November 3, 1743 in Gießen , † April 2, 1797 in Darmstadt ) was a German lawyer.
Life
Höpfner comes from old Hessian families of scholars. He was born in 1743 in Giessen as the son of the Giessen law professor Johann Ernst Höpfner and the maternal grandson of the law professor Johann Friedrich Wahl. From the marriage with Marianne born Thom (1751-1840) their son Georg Höpfner emerged, who also became a lawyer.
Höpfner was from 1767 professor at the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel and from 1771 full professor for natural law , legal history and legal antiquities at the University of Giessen .
In 1781 he became a judge of higher appeal and in 1782 a secret tribunal advisor in Darmstadt. In this position, however, he did not hold a judicial office, which was usually associated with this rank, but was supposed to promote the codification in Hessen-Darmstadt and unify the state legislation.
Höpfner has been part of Goethe's circle of friends since his youth ; Höpfner did not follow his wish to come to the court as a lawyer in Weimar .
Höpfner invented the silhouette chair on which the head of the seated person could be fixed for the purpose of creating silhouettes . Using this silhouette chair, he also made a silhouette of Goethe in 1774. The silhouettes removed in this way were reduced to the desired usable format with the help of a cork's beak.
