Julius Jaenzon
Julius Jaenzon ( pronunciation : [ ˌ ʝʉːliɵs ˈ ʝɑːnsɔn ], actually Julius Jaensson ; * July 8, 1885 in Gothenburg , † February 17, 1961 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish cameraman and film director . He was involved in the production of numerous silent films by the directors Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström . Sometimes he used the pseudonym "J. Julius".
Life
Jaenzon trained as a portrait photographer and opened his own studio. In 1905 he began filming, and in the following years he made nature photos and reports in Norway, Sweden and the USA. The short film The Dangers of Fishing Life was made in Norway in 1908 . From 1910 he worked for Charles Magnusson's film company Svenska Bio . Two years later Magnusson engaged the directors Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström - Jaenzon filmed Sjöström's debut film The Gardener and several of Stiller's films in 1912 . By the end of the 1910s, Jaenzon achieved recordings of realistic people in real, rough nature, especially for these directors, who established the reputation of the Swedish film of the silent film era as being of high quality. The most important works of this style include Terje Vigen (1917), Berg-Eyvind und seine Weib (1918) and Mr. Arnes Schatz (1919).
In Victor Sjöström's Der Fuhrmann des Todes (1921), Jaenzon made extensive use of the film technique of multiple exposures and thus created the ghostly images required for the implementation of Selma Lagerlöf 's story of the same name . In Mauritz Stiller's epic Gösta Berling (1924) - another Lagerlöf film adaptation - Jaenzon once again staged the Swedish landscape with his flair for nature photography alongside the main actors Greta Garbo and Lars Hanson .
From the mid-1920s, Jaenzon was often behind the camera for Gustaf Molander . Together with Edvin Adolphson , he directed Sag es in Tönen (1929), one of the first Swedish sound films.
The cameraman Henrik Jaenzon was the brother of Julius Jaenzon.
