Julius Schindler (born May 30, 1878 in Moravská Třebová ; died December 20, 1941 in Great Neck , New York ) was a German entrepreneur .

Life

Schindler lived in Hamburg from 1905 to 1931, most recently in a city villa in Nonnenstieg in Harvestehude . From 1926 he also owned a summer residence in Rissen , the Villa Tannenhof. At the end of 1926 he joined the High German Israelite Congregation in Altona . "At the same time, he actively participated in the secular community work of the German-Israelite Congregation in Hamburg ".

In addition, in 1920 he donated a total of 35,000 Reichsmarks to the Hamburg Scientific Foundation , which honored this social commitment by naming the donor on one of the two marble plaques for the "Founders and main sponsors of the Hamburg Scientific Foundation" in the lobby of the main building of the University.

In the autumn of 1931 Schindler emigrated, gave up his German citizenship and in 1932, together with his wife and two sons, took on Liechtenstein citizenship. He lived in France until 1939 and then emigrated to the United States via Canada

Schindler was the founder of the Hamburg company Oelwerke Julius Schindler and the tanker shipping company Julius Schindler . The headquarters of the Oelwerke was the Kontorhaus Hohe Bleichen 28.

Since Schindler was Jewish, his companies were confiscated and " Aryanized " by the Nazis in 1938 and 1939, respectively . In December 1941, Schindler died in the United States.

His marriage in 1905 resulted in two sons and a daughter.

In 1961 the children Anni Kleeber and Gustave Schindler donated an ongoing scholarship to the Chemical Engineering Department at the Technical University in Haifa . The scholarship is called Julius and Irma Schindler Memorial Scholarship .

A street in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg was named after him.
