Julius Stürmer (born May 22, 1915 in Karánsebes , Kingdom of Hungary , Austria-Hungary ; † February 7, 2011 in Geltendorf ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Julius Stürmer was born in 1915 as the son of a church painter in Karánsebes, Hungary. In 1918 this area fell to Romania . Julius Stürmer attended the Romanian Lyceum there from 1925 to 1934 ; from 1931 to 1933 the German secondary school in Timișoara . From 1933 to 1934 he studied painting and art education at the Timișoara Art Academy and from 1934–1938 at the Berlin Art Academy . Here he worked for UFA and as an advertising painter for Auto Union . From 1939 to 1941 he worked as an art teacher at the Banatia and at the Piarist High School in Timișoara, from 1942 to 1944 as an advertising painter in Berlin and as an art teacher in Neuzelle in Lower Lusatia .

He was arrested on December 24, 1946 while on vacation in Romania. Julius Stürmer was held for seven months in a prison run by the Soviet secret service Securitate in Constanța and sentenced to 15 years in a labor camp. In the Vorkuta labor camp he benefited from his training as an academic painter. as painting assignments from officers and guards gave him some small perks. Julius Stürmer was one of the last 29 German prisoners who were released from Soviet captivity after Konrad Adenauer 's trip to Moscow and who arrived in Berlin on November 26, 1956. Stürmer processed his memories of the Gulag in his book The icy hell Vorkuta .

In the Federal Republic of Germany , Stürmer worked for several decades as a freelance painter and graphic artist, primarily for the automotive industry. His work can be found in the automobile museum in Aschaffenburg , in the Opel collection in Rüsselsheim , at Audi , BMW , Mercedes and Continental tires. Most of his works on the subject of cars are exhibited in the Auto & Tractor Museum in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen on Lake Constance . Above all, his work as a commercial artist is shown here, but also design drawings and caricatures on the subject of motorsport.

In 1972, Stürmer portrayed the rocket pioneer Hermann Oberth from Transylvania , whereupon he received further commissions for portraits of pioneers in space travel , including Wernher von Braun . The portraits can be seen alongside other works by Stürmer in Peenemünde .
