Julius Stewart

Julius LeBlanc Stewart (born September 6, 1855 in Philadelphia , Penn .; † January 4, 1919 in Paris ) was an American painter who spent most of his life in Paris.

Life

Julius Stewart was born the son of the American sugar millionaire William Hood Stewart. The family moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Paris in 1865 when Julius was six years old. William Stewart was an art collector and patron of Fortuny and artists of the Barbizon School . As a teenager, Julius studied with Eduardo Zamacois , then with Jean-Léon Gérôme and at the École des Beaux-Arts and later with Raymondo de Madrazo . Julius Stewart began his career as a landscape painter. He was habitual in various literary salons in Paris and in his later years painted mainly opulent portraits of the protagonists of the Paris Belle Époque and scenes from the salons as well as erotically charged female nudes in idyllic landscapes or in interiors . In 1896 he received a large gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Berlin .

Julius Stewart died in Paris on January 5, 1919 at the age of 63 and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery .
