Yuri Torbek
Juri Torbek ( Russian Юрий Альфредович Торбек ; born May 5, 1954 in Narva , † January 3, 2003 in Krasnodar ) was a Soviet boxer . In 1981 he became European middleweight amateurs champion .
Career
Yuri Torbek, a Belarusian, started boxing as a teenager. As a member of the Soviet security forces, he belonged to the Dynamo sports organization in Minsk .
As a 24-year-old he started in 1978 at the championship of the police forces of the Warsaw Pact countries in Lodz and reached the final in the light heavyweight division , in which he was defeated on points against Paweł Skrzecz from Poland . In 1979 he finished 3rd in the Soviet Middleweight Championship after losing points in the semifinals to Vladimir Shin . In 1980 he was eliminated from this championship in the quarter-finals due to an abandonment defeat against Vladimir Gorbunov and only came in 5th place and then got no chance to qualify for the Olympic boxing tournament in Moscow .
1981 Juri Torbek won the Soviet European Championship elimination in Riga in the middleweight division, where he defeated Alexander Belyayev on points in the final. At the European Championships in Cologne in 1981 he was well prepared and defeated Robert Pfitscher from Austria by breaking off in the first round as well as Christer Corpi, Sweden (5: 0), Zygmunt Gosiewski , Poland (5: 0) and Pedro van Raamsdonk , Netherlands (4: 1) on points and became European champion .
In 1982 he succeeded in Tallinn for the World Championships in Munich in the middleweight division by winning over R. Rogevich, Chamsat Dschabrailow and Alexander Beljajew. In Munich he defeated Terje Sween from Norway on points (5: 0), but lost to Iran Barkley from the United States (1: 4) in the quarterfinals and only came in 5th place.
After this defeat, Juri Torbek was no longer used in any international championship. However, he was at the Soviet championship in 1983 a. a. with victories over Algirdas Jančauskas , Albert Nikoljan and Juri Waulin 3rd place, which he also took in 1984 in the light heavyweight division after losing points in the semifinals against Vitaly Kachanowski. In 1985 he was finally still Soviet light heavyweight champion, where he Sh. Magomedow, Yuri Waulin and Vitaly Kachanowski in the final defeated on points.
